DNA results suggest that the descendants of Jacob Boney/Bony (abt 1775-1863), who came to southeast Ohio from York county, Pennsylvania via Washington county, PA, are indeed related to the Boney family of North Carolina. However, the exact connection cannot be determined, and Jacob Boney’s parents are currently unknown.
While there is a genetic relationship, it seems unlikely Ohio Jacob (1775-1863) is directly descended from the Jacob “Joggi” Boni (1680-1761) who is the ancestor of the North Carolina Boneys. Joggi’s whole family came directly to North Carolina in 1736. His wife and children are all listed in the immigration document, and there does not appear to be any connections to Pennsylvania or Ohio.
Jacob “Joggi” Boni’s parents were Jacob Boni (1645-1710) and Elsbeth Landold. They had another son Hans Boni (1672-1728) who had a son Johann “Hans” Boni (1695-1763). At least three of Hans Jr’s children immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the same boat in 1767. They are:
- Simon Boni (abt 1740-1778) – Lived in N.J. across the Delaware River from Philadelphia – Died in Lancaster, PA, fighting in the Rev War
- Hans “Michael” Boni (abt 1740-?) – Lived in N.J. across the Delaware River from Philadelphia - Fought in the Rev War – Administered Simon’s will in 1778
- Anna Boni Tschudi (1737-1793) – Came with husband Martin Tschudi/Tschudy/Judy, who also fought in the Rev War – They lived in Philadelphia and then passed through York county, PA, before heading to Kentucky.
Andres Boni /Bony/Boney/Bonij/Ponne is another Boni who came to Pennsylvania from Switzerland via Germany and Netherland. He came in 1729 with Alexander Mack and was one of the founders of the Brethren church (related to Mennonites). There is an extensive history of his persecution in Switzerland for religious beliefs and his eventual expulsion from Switzerland. Many of their followers settled in Ephrata, Lancaster, PA, which is about 40 miles from York, PA. It’s is unclear how Andres is related to the other Swiss-American Boneys or whether he had any descendants.
