The History of Morgan Co., OH

John Little Phillis moved to Muskingum County, Ohio in the spring of 1816 and lived there until the fall of 1817. He then moved to Center township, Morgan County, Ohio. He entered 320 acres of land which was all heavy timber.

My grandfather, Benjaman (1846– 1928), married Sarah Doyle Phillis (1851– 1928), descendent of the Revolutioner, Joseph Phillis (1744– 1831), and John Little Phillis, a soldier in the War of 1812.  Johns wife was Sally Doyle of Erie, PA.

Joseph Phillis died in 1830, at an advanced age, his wife having “gone before” in 1827, leaving the following children... John (who died in Guernsey county, Ohio, was the father of sixteen children)

    From Morgan Co., Old Newspaper abstrations, August 21, 1896 : William Wilson 18 years old, is working for Varner Brothers in their sawmill on Joseph C Phillis farm, broke the lock on a trunk and took $20 worth of goods. He may be young in work but old in business.

    Sprowls Scrapbook page 023: Mrs. Katie Keith of Waterford, aged 73 years, departed earth on Saturday afternoon. She was the daughter of the late Joseph C. Phillis and Mary Jane Swickard Phillis and was born on August 24, 1870, on the farm of her parent in Center township, Morgan County. she was united in marriage on March 2, 1892, at Centerville with Orien W. Keith (b. abt. 1870), who expired on Feb. 27, 1939. She passed part of her life at Centerville coming to Waterford in 1908, where she afterword resided. Mrs. Keith possessed a home loving disposition. She was a member of Mt. Moriah Chapter No. 506, Order of Eatern Sar of Beverly, of Beverly Rebekah Lodge, and of the Friendly class of Wateford Methodist church. Surviving are the only son Joseph O. Keith (b. 1900 OH) who is connected with trhe State Department of Taxation, the daughter-in-law Charlotte Seely Keith, a grandson and grand daughter Ray Seely Keith and Jo Ann Keith of Waterford and a brother Wm. E. Phillis of Beverly. Funeral rites were held at 3pm on Monday at the Mindling funeral home, Rev. D. W. Lucas of Waterford officiating. Ritualistic service of M. Moriah Chapter No. 506 O.E.S., was conducted and members of the Rebekah Lodge No. 757, formed an honerary escort. Interment was in Waterford Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Hebe W. Ullman, C.L. Vonderau, Will Mason Jr., Richard Dunn, C.R. Leget, George Orndoff, Dale Johnson and Charles Bailey.
