Joseph J. Smith, 77, former Mariettan, is dead at Grafton, W. Va., where he expired on Monday evening, following a week's illness of double pneumonia. Up until 20 years ago he lived in Marietta and at Reno, where he was well known. After leaving this city he located at Newell, W. Va., and 3 weeks ago went to Grafton to work.

 

In addition to his widow, Mr. Smith is survived by ten children: A.L. Smith and Mrs. A.O. Seevers, ninth street, Marietta; Mrs. Dudley Racer, Reno; Mrs. J. A. Moore, Little Hocking; Clinton Smith, Willow W. Va; Mrs. Retta Mitchell, Dayton; J.N. Smith in Oregon; Mrs. T.R. Emrick, Parkersburg; C. D. Smith, Swift, and Edward Smith, Bridgeport.

 

Marietta relatives left at noon on Tuesday, for Newell, to which place the remains will be taken, and where funeral services and burial will take place on Wednesday afternoon.

She was born in Pennsylvania, Aug. 6, 1871, a daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret Sprowles Smith. On Jan 19, 1888, she was married to James A. Moore, who preceded her in death in 1940. She was a member of the Waverly Methodist Church. Surviving are three sons. Charles Moore, Waverly; John Moore, Akron, O.; and Thomas Moore, of Parkersburg; five daughters, Mrs. Charlotte Johnson and Mrs. Margaret Wingrove, both of Waverly.; Mrs. Phoebe Affolter, Akron.; Mrs. Pauline Dunfee, Coolville,; Mrs. Genevieve Miracle, Marietta; 20 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Three sons and a daughter preceded her in death. Seven brothers and four sisters are deceased. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 pm at the Waverly Methodist Church with the Rev. Wilbur Hardin and W.W. McClure officiating. Interment will be in the Willow Island cemetery.
    The body will be removed from the Doudna and McClure funeral home to the family residence this afternoon. and to the church one hour before the service.

Racer, 73, who died Saturday afternoon at his home in the Valley neighborhood on Newport Pike, were held Monday afternoon at the Valley Baptist Church. Interment was made in Valley Cemetery. Mr. Racer was a well known farmer and had spent his lifetime on the old Racer homestead. He was born Nov. 10, 1871 and was a son of the late Charles and Margaret Day Racer. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Jennie Smith Racer whom he married Oct. 10, 1902; and one daughter, Miss Margaret Racer of the family home. Marcellus Racer of the Valley neighborhood is the surviving brother.

Funeral services were held at the home on Monday at 2 pm Rev. J.B. Williamson of Waterford officiated. Interment was made in Waterford Cemetery. Mr. Smith was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Smith. He was born at Ogden W. Va., on March 19, 1893. He lived in Bridgeport for a number of years and came from there to Waterford Township last Summer to make his home on a farm there. surviving the deceased are his widow, Mrs. Freda Snyder Smith, and two children, Elvina and Edward Smith, both at home. Brothers and sisters are Addison Smith, Mrs. Minnie Seevers and Mrs. Jennie Racer of Marietta; John Smith of Santa Paula, Calif.; Clyde smith of Waterford; Clinton Smith of Willow Island, W.
